Care at a Glance
Vivarium size
- Adults need a minimum 8’ enclosure that is at least 2’ tall. The more space provided, the better this species tends to thrive. Juveniles can do well in a 4’x2’x2’ habitat until around 3 years of age.
- Deep substrate (Terra Sahara with 40% Terra Firma mixed in), along with large cork tubes, sturdy branches, rocks, and large shrubs or trees, is preferred.
Temperature
- Provide a hotspot of around 95F with a cool side around 70F.
- This species tolerates natural temperature fluctuations better than many others.
Humidity
- Humidity should remain low, around 30%, with brief spikes up to 50% during parts of the day.
Diet
- Frozen / thawed rodents only. Never fed live.
Recommended Bioactive Setup
- Firma X Sahara mix (40/60)
- Mixed leaf litter, heavy botanicals, and wood throughout the substrate. Substrate should be a minimum of 10” deep for adults.
- Productive clean up crew: Giant Canyons, Giant Oranges, and Dwarf Whites can all be utilized (Dwarf Whites remain in the deepest layers of substrate, while Giant
- Canyons and Giant Oranges stay more active on the surface).
- Dense live planting with hardy arid species such as hibiscus trees, yucca, and ponytail palms works well. Small plants will not hold up to this species.
- Natural hardscape with heavy branching, cork tubes (they love fitting inside them), rocks, and multiple elevated basking areas is ideal.
- They benefit from UVB, with a recommended Ferguson Zone of around 2.
